Innovations

Heat and Power Services subscribe to a philosophy of quality maintenance coupled with a determination to develop and introduce innovations that improve plant efficiency, reliability, and savings. Our international connections in the CHP business have allowed us to optimise a number of problematic maintenance issues and these are now fundamental to our maintenance protocols.

The life blood of an engine is its oil. At takeover on our sites our general experience has been that existing oil life ranges from only 750h -1500h and that detonation (pre-ignition) is a ubiquitous and previously intractable problem. Detonation can burn/torch valves and the debris can spell disaster for the engine. Some new clients were previously experiencing hundreds of detonations a day. Experience has shown us that oil selection is crucial and has led to the identification of our current oil, which we use without exception, as an answer to these problems. Now at all our maintained plants even the worst the detonation problems have been eliminated and oil life has improved to 3000h.

Another Heat and Power Services innovation is spark plugs. We were the first UK company to use multi-torch spark plugs and pre-combustion chambers. These plugs send out flames in 4 directions into the ignition cylinder and have two main benefits:

1. They make the engine run about 1% more efficient, reducing gas consumption by 1%.
2. They reduce exhaust port temperatures, already down 30-40ºC, by another 30-40ºC (60-70ºC in all) which greatly improves the reliability and maintenance costs of the engine.
